Dome and Cupola Repairs and Redecoration

This Grade 1 listed church with its large footprint, covered portico, voluminous galleried interior and central dome is a dominant feature in Northampton Town centre.

The poor condition of the dome cupola and lantern was highlighted in 2017. Of particular concern was the chandelier which was suspended by a chain from the cupola roof structure and some loose high level plaster. The lead covered dome was in good condition externally but cracking to the supporting segmental arches internally on all 4 sides was also a concern and needed further investigation.

In 2013 the repair works included a full height internal scaffold to the underside of the dome and cupola. Timber and plaster repairs were carried out and the dome and cupola was re-decorated internally. The lead on the dome lead was in good condition but the cupola and other timber features were rotten in places and in poor condition. All the paint was stripped externally, timber repairs carried out and it was redecorated. The cupola apex sphere an cross were also re-gilded.
